Business Operations
A next generation of business operations technology, discussed herein, aims to improve the operational management capability of any business by leveraging modern operational technology over antiquated and subjective business operations management practices. This paper will discuss the modern technology associated with the establishment, execution, and management of business operations, regardless the stage of organizational development.
Early-stage companies win by not losing… Becoming established and profitable.
Early-stage companies only begin to succeed when they successfully introduce into the market a product and/or service upon which they can begin to earn revenue from. The goal of an early-stage company is to survive by becoming viable, with a foundationally functional business model.
Mature companies lose by not winning… Remaining profitable as they grow.
A s a company seeks to mature operationally, it must possess an operational strategy that will further enable effective business operations, with efficient operational execution, for sustained profitability of the business. Why? Operational growth brings complexity that must be responsibly managed to ensure ongoing operations remain effectively efficient as the business scales.
Gross Profit = Sales Revenue – Operational Expense (cost of operations)
Business operations must be effective in achieving results that matter to the business and efficient in operational execution, for profitability. Technology in business operations management is paramount for managing business operations success.
Business Operations Technology
Although the concepts of ‘technology’ can be defined, classified, and described in a rigorous way, it is absolutely a multifaceted concept that certainly requires understanding from a business operations perspective. There is so much more to learn than simply, “What software is available?”
All too often, when we hear the word ‘technology’, we think first of things like computers, software, and electronics. Things like that. However, the word ‘technology’ also encompasses business process methods and systems associated with their execution. It is a word that can be used to describe standard operating procedures, instructions, guides, and even the training techniques that provide the step-by-step methods that capture the organizational knowledge that goes in making things.
Technology is defined as the practical application of conceptual knowledge and technical solutions that can be applied for achieving practical objectives, in a reproducible way, within controlled boundaries of variation. When defined in this way, technology can holistically be additionally be considered as the establishment, execution, and management of the capability of a business to create and satisfy market demand for the products and/or services they offer.
It is imperative that we apply modern technological solutions to optimally succeed in establishing, executing, and managing our business operations capabilities.
eQMS Technology
The eQMS technology that is utilized to manage and execute standard work process is an extremely important component in establishing an operational management system for your business.
Did you notice that the technology associated with the design of the work process was addressed (in the DOWNLOAD) before the discussion of the eQMS technology that could also be utilized to support the execution and management of that work? The establishment of the work process shouldn’t be considered through the lens of what some software company believed should be done as an isolated subset of the work your organization does, within its business operations.
Organizations are held back when they cling to outdated, even antiquated systems of how they did work in the not-so-distant past. It is absolutely imperative to understand that new and advanced eQMS technology has eclipsed the tired old technology solutions that provide only a limited number of pre-programed work process solutions that they deem to be processes used for “quality management”, citing processes such as CAPA, Document Management, Change Control, and Change Management, as examples.
These pre-programed eQMS solutions were also developed with an extremely outdated paradigm that the management of ‘quality’ is limited to a fixed number of discrete processes that are primarily reactive in nature. For example, one such outdated eQMS technology solution is described as offering “control over all quality related processes in one place”, without understanding that there is no such thing as “quality related processes”… Only work processes that are built and managed for a ‘quality’ outcome, providing results that matter to the business.
No-Code eQMS Technology Solutions
An eQMS technology solution provider might tell you: “Depending upon the type of eQMS solution selected, the implementation process can take anywhere from 30 days to 12 months. Solutions requiring revalidation when a change to the configuration is requested by the manufacturer will take longer to develop and deploy compared with one that is pre-validated.”
What you need to understand about such a statement is that these pre-validated “solutions” (work processes) are their preconfigured solutions, not yours, AND they do not know your business. They sell generic and outdated “quality management” work process solutions that they pre-configured, programmed that configuration in their software solution, and pre-validated for your use.
Your business capabilities, previously discussed herein above, are further delineated to provide specificity and detail, in association with individual operational capabilities that is further defined as the work processes that must be done to satisfy your business operations needs. This can easily be accomplished utilizing a modern no-code eQMS technology solution that provides you with full control over a work process “solutions” design that allows you to capture all of the work your organization does, within its business operations. A no-code eQMS technology enables you to specify a business process, drag and drop shapes representing process steps (think RACI) into the correct order, and to automate that work with the powerful integration of that and other work process flows into the business management system that you use to manage operational ‘quality’.
